Since 2012, poverty mapping has been introduced as a useful tool to a very helpful way identify the where the poor live – as defined by income. The Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) and Poverty Reduction and Economic Management (PREM) team of the World Bank have started to look at how poverty and sector maps can be developed for sanitation, but more importantly made accessible to sector professionals, program managers, and policy makers to inform policy and decisions on national programs.

WSP in Hanoi organized an Introduction of the Poverty and Sanitation Mapping Tools with some initial thinking on how to better use data to target resources to areas in most need as defined by income, but also access to basic sanitation. The Introduction aims to provide information on:

1)  poverty and sanitation maps, and the data that are used to build them;
2)  the dimensions of poverty rates vs concentration of poverty (number of poor people) and the similar application to sanitation;
3)  how these maps can be combined to inform decisions.
4) and to importantly obtain feedback from participants on: i.) the concept of an automated mapping tool, ii.) the value and intuitiveness of the current tool and iii.) ideas and recommendations of how improve the tool to make it more user friendly and valuable.
