A Vietnamese officials has affirmed that Vietnam is committed to complying with the obligations and responsibilities required to protect the environment and water resources within the framework of bilateral cooperation programs between Vietnam and Cambodia.

PHNOM PENH — Viet Nam is committed to protecting the environment and water resources within the framework of bilateral co-operation programmes between Viet Nam and Cambodia, said General Secretary of the Viet Nam National Mekong Committee (VNMC) Nguyen Hong Toan.

Toan made the pledge at a seminar on the environmental impacts of Viet Nam’s hydroelectric power plants on the Se San river basin held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Thursday.

The VNMC leader said that the plants have spurred socio-economic development for local people living along the common border area and have strengthened the Cambodia-Laos-Viet Nam Economic Development Triangle.

Viet Nam will work with Cambodia in order to minimise the negative impacts of the exploitation of water resources along the Mekong River, Toan said.

However, according to Tur Hagel, representative from Sweden’s international consultant organisation, Swenco Groner, field research and document references showed that the building of Viet Nam’s hydroelectric power plants has not polluted Cambodian territory downstream of the Se San River.

For his part, Cambodian Minister of the Environment Mok Mareth said in his inaugural speech that the event was aimed at implementing bilateral co-operation between Mekong River committees of the two countries as well as between Viet Nam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment.—VNS
